Please also turn your attention briefly to the following internal announcements below.
As most of you will already know, we transferred the fulfilment of our 1st and 2nd line technical support to the purpose-built team in Sofia, Bulgaria recently (see the Corporate News and Events page for the full announcement back in March) and we wanted to bring you an update.
We're pleased to report that the new process is bedding in nicely, and we hope that you are finding responses are faster, both on the phones and by email, and that on the whole we are meeting your needs! We'd value your feedback, so if you're satisfied or dissatisfied, our Customer Services team wants to hear from you!
- Recent Service interruptions
On behalf of the Technical team here at Hostway we'd like to apologise for the recent interruptions of certain services such as FTP, and basic website availability that may have affected some of our shared hosting customers over recent weeks.
We are trying hard to carry out much needed improvements to aspects of our netowork and server infrastructure (including a large amount of consolidation and migrations to superior equipment), and this has in some instances had some unforeseen effects, and which have sometimes taken longer than we'd have liked to fix - so for this we are formally sorry.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about these, or any other hosting related matters, please do not hesitate to contact me or our Customer Services team, and we'll be happy to help.
Enjoy the May edition!

Content 'is more important than a site's homepage'
Businesses that are in the process of crafting their website for the purposes of search engine optimisation have been urged that they should first focus on content." According to digital marketing publication Econsultancy, building a site is like writing a book - the story or the content must be completed before designing the cover or the homepage.
Chris Lake suggested that product pages are the best place for any business to start because it is those pages that attract consumers in the first place.
"The product page is far more vital to the success of a business than the homepage - it's where the critical purchase decisions take place," he explained.
Nick Stamoulis, search expert for the Search Engine Optimisation Journal, recently claimed that web builders should also consider things like the attractiveness of a page, its functionality and its potential to lead to sales before crafting it.
He too agreed that the front page alone is not enough and that the content within is key.

SaaS 'is a must-have for SMBs'
Software as a service (<a href=SaaS) is a must-have for individuals looking to set up their own business, it has been claimed.">According to Microsoft, SaaS is a viable option for small to medium-sized businesses (SMB) now that it is real as opposed to a mere concept.
Eduardo Rosini, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Small and Midmarket Solutions and Partners organisation, explained: "The ability to run software on the premises or from the cloud … and be operational without having to make a significant upfront investment, is obviously very attractive for SMBs in particular."
He said it is no longer necessary for businesses to set up their own datacentres and servers, which also means that it does not cost as much anymore.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's Ron Markezich recently outlined the benefits cloud computing can have for SMBs.
He explained that the service can equip them with an innovative business model that is both cheap to run and high performing.

Microsoft 'will have to work very hard for next SharePoint'
Past successes mean that Microsoft will have to work very hard to please their critics who are awaiting the forthcoming beta version release of SharePoint 2010." At least that is the opinion of the Understanding SharePoint Journal, which has claimed that the 2010 edition will have a lot to live up to among members of the IT industry, owing to the fact that the 2007 version was so good.
Bjorn Furuknap, editor and author of the publication, explained that the technology community's expectations are going to be very high.
He said: "SharePoint 2010 has a lot of reputation to defend being the fastest growing product in Microsoft's history."
This comes after Microsoft SharePoint Server director Tom Rizzo told networking news website Network World that SharePoint is Microsoft's fastest growing product ever.
He also claimed at Microsoft's TechEd 2009 conference that the 2010 version will have to be considered in terms of 64-bit capabilities.

Internet vendors 'are being cautious'
Online retailers are being careful not to be caught out by the economy and are conducting business with caution, it would seem.According to ecommerce publication Internet Retailer, the fact that 2008 ended with a poor fourth quarter has encouraged businesses to act with prudence.
For example, many are being vigilant when it comes to buying and making major investments in stock for fear that it will not be bought.
However, Internet Retailer editor Don Davis added: "They're also watching carefully for signs that the economy as a whole is rebounding so that they don't get caught with too little inventory."
He explained, that while now is not the best time for ecommerce, retailers are "universally optimistic" that the economy will rebound.
Still, an article published recently on Internet News claimed that it is unlikely that the online retail sector will enjoy the same kind of double-digit growth it had seen over recent years.

Companies 'should consider objective of online marketing strategy'
Businesses that are engaging in online marketing campaigns through social networking sites have been encouraged to look at precisely what they want to achieve.According to the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), many companies are unsure as to what raising their online profile via sites such as Facebook will do for them, reports EConsultancy.
The organisation also warned that any web-based initiative is easily measurable, yet many firms do not know what they want to observe and record.
"You need to figure out your objective," said Randall Rothenberg, president of the IAB.
"Anything you want online is directly measurable."
Mr Rothenberg added that it is "very easy" to measure the success of a social media-based online marketing campaign.
This comes after a survey by Webcredible found that social networking sites are especially popular among mobile internet users, with more than half of consumers accessing portals such as Facebook through their handsets.

Outsourcing IT 'is good for budgets and the environment'
Choosing to outsource their IT needs to an external server could ultimately save businesses money on top of reducing their negative impact on the environment, it has been claimed." According to technology analyst Krischer and Associates, the fact that data centres are designed to operate on no more than one kilobyte per square metre means that they are a viable option for eco-conscious businesses.
Josh Krischer, founder of the organisation, appeared at the Green IT 2009 Conference and Exhibition, where he claimed: "If you are energy efficient you can save money - a natural saving - and there are environmental benefits."
This would have been good news for the majority of those in attendance at the conference considering a recent poll conducted by Forrester Research found that 53 per cent of businesses believe the most important reason for green IT is reducing the impact of energy consumption on the environment.
